Jamie never liked the feeling of being wrapped in plastic. Not as a child, and not as a teen.
When he was little, his bed had crinkly mattress covers and hospital-like pads, all meant to keep the wet from soaking in. But all they ever did was make him feel like a problem.
So when he turned fifteen and asked if he could sleep without any protection—just sheets and a bare mattress underneath—his mother looked at him for a long time before nodding.
“If that’s how you feel safe,” she said softly, “then that’s what we’ll do.”
And they did.
